Behavioral expert and founder and CEO of Applied Behavior Research, Chase Hughes, likes to say that discipline is the gateway drug to everything else in authority over us. Once you acquire self-discipline, you can develop confidence, composure and so much more.

Chase defines discipline as your ability to prioritize the needs of your future self ahead of those of your present self. He explains that this shift in perspective can lead to a modification of our dopamine pathways. Look for ways to get your dopamine from your past self instead of your present self. One way Chase describes achieving this effect is seeing your present self as a “butler” for your future self. What can you do right now to make future you look back on past you with appreciation instead of regret?

Some ideas … In the spring, slip a $20 bill or a motivational note into a pocket of a jacket you will not wear again until the fall when you’ll discover this gift to future you. Pick out your clothes for the next morning the day before so that your morning goes more smoothly. When you start with these small gestures, you start to rewire your brain for building positive future outcomes for yourself. This is when you can start to ramp up your present efforts to things like, saving, investing, correcting diet, exercising, learning, etc.

Check out this short video and see if you can put this “butler” to work in your life today.
