Flow State in the Morning

Flow State in the Morning

Many influencers in the productivity space talk about establishing a morning routine that will prime you for productivity. But the morning routine practice can be a double-edged sword. Apparently, for just a couple minutes after we first wake up, our minds are already primed to be hyper focused on any task we apply ourselves to. Therefore, an elaborate morning routine can snap us out of this natural flow state and lose us the mental clarity we seek.

I personally just roll out of bed and put in an hour or two of high -value work before I even look at my phone, make a cup of coffee, or do any exercise. I find that I get my most important work of the day done before anyone else in my household is awake. There are no external distractions and my mind has no internal “open loops” from earlier activities to pull me away from my target.

In the article below, Tim Denning outlines his thoughts on entering flow state in the morning. He aims for a 4-hour flow state block, which doesn’t seem realistic for most people. He also mentions quitting his 9-5 job to have more flow state experiences. Once again, I’ll say this doesn’t sound realistic for most of us. Like I said above, I get great value in just one to two hours of flow state in the morning. You don’t to go to extremes to harness this mental superpower.
