If you are easily distracted from productive work, you are not alone. In fact, we live in what some call “The Age of Distraction“. Serious efforts are being made to take control of your attention. As a result, many of us have lost the skill of focusing on one task at a time. This is tragic, because if you are not able to focus, you will not be able consciously improve yourself or your life. As you may know, one of my main goals with this blog is to help people reclaim their minds and their attention from the forces of distraction. Today’s post is about one technique for accomplishing this.
The Pomodoro Technique was invented by Francesco Cirillo, an Italian developer and entrepreneur, in the late 1980s. Cirillo developed the time management method while he was a university student struggling with focus and procrastination. He committed himself to a short, ten-minute burst of focused study time using a simple, tomato-shaped kitchen timer. Consequently, this “pomodoro” (Italian for tomato) timer gave the technique its distinctive name.
Cirillo later refined the method into the well-known system of 25-minute work intervals separated by short breaks. He eventually published a book detailing the full methodology in 2006. See it here: The Pomodoro Technique: The Acclaimed Time-Management System That Has Transformed How We Work.
